The cell phone experience

I never thought that something small, black, and hard could be such a blessing. What I am I on about, it is my cell phone . It has changed my life and the lives of the people that are around me. Sometimes I sit back and wonder how people ever lived without one, even my mum who is in her 50’s wonders how she ever managed without one. Its original function was to make calls and now it has become a multi tasking technology. It can be used to sends short messages (sms), multimedia messages (mms), for video calling, as a camera or video camera and now people can use their phones to go onto the internet. It has changed the way people communicate; now people can contact others in an instant either by call or by message. Business people can take their work any where, parents can track their children’s where about or parents can be contacted in an emergency. People feel safe when they are driving long distance because they know they have their mobile phones in case of emergency and now with GPRS on cell phones one can find their way around the country. It has brought people closer together through technology , the phenomena of MXIT has changed young adults lives by keeping in contact with their friends from around the country and world by instant chat at a cheap rate. If it was not for cell phones then there would be no MXIT. Cell phones have become an important part of our lives.

hey, I've got to agree with you - the convergence of media is amazing. Like you said - the initial funtion of the telephone was just to make phone calls. The cell phone first added mobility to the telephone (you can carry a phone with you - in your pocket), now it does several other tasks that are done by other media. These media are articulated together to make the contemporary cellphone and most people don't actually know that its only through convergence that this is possible (all the cellphone features).
Have you seen the film Click, starring Adam Sandler? Things happened by 'clicking' on a remote - similarly with cellphones, a lot of things are possible with just a few clicks of buttons (video recording, music downloadind, photography, messaging, phoning, internet, email, and, and, and - I can go on forever). You know there's cellphone games and also cellphone pornography - hetrosexual and homosexual; What do you think of that?
Keep me posted, Simone.

Peace and Blessings..

of course Simone, taday a world without cell phones could be very boring, but our parents grew up in a world without cell phones, communicating through land lines phones and writing letters. cell phones really improved our standard of living. they are also helpful especially in emergencies because they are mobile, we are connected everywhere we go!

Simone I agree with you that cellphones are a must have and 'can't live without' but I also believe that so much is lost because of the constantly advancing technology. Relationships change, lies become easier and avoiding commitments is a ball, its absolutely frustrating. Worse even is when you desperately need to contact someone and their battery is dead or they're simply avoiding your call. Feenberg argues however, that one can have a more intimate relationship using only digital technology as their medium of communication but the experience of sitting with a group of friends, to me, is as memorable as the numbing pain in your fingers after mxit conversations you can no longer recall.Good observation though!
